After breakfast, Dorothy and I took the Street car over to the Alamo car hire office. We explained that we needed a big car to get all our luggage in. We were assured that if we upgraded to a Dodge Charger, there would be enough room. So we took the Dodge Charger.
When we got back to the hotel to pick Pat a and Liz up. We struggled getting the luggage into the boot. We filled the boot to it's capacity, but still had to put a case on the back seat.
We decided to sort this out when we got to Monterey as we were short on time. In fact we had planned to see the Redwood Forest in Muir National Park, but it was 12 miles in the wrong direction, so we had to give this a miss as well.
Trying to get out of San Francisco was not as striaght forward as we thought. After several aborted attempts to get through the labyrinth of streets and one way systems to the Pacific coast, we eventually took a lunch break at a cafe and spoke with a local, who gave us direction to Highway 1, The Pacific Coastal Highway (this was only a few hundred yards away from the cafe, we were on the right track). Only 130 miles to Monterey.
