Twizel 3 Feb - Wednesday

We woke to an overcast morning, around 14°C, it looked as though it had rained in the night. I went for a short jog in the park, but went the wrong way and it became a long (slow) jog.

After breakfast we got on our way to Twizel, 288km away. We stopped for a morning coffee at Ashburton.

Then we started to see the mountains in the distance.
As you can see the weather improved as the day went on. Clear sky's and some wonderful rolling scenery.
Just the odd small cumulus cloud in a clear sky.
We stopped for lunch in Fairlie. The Wigan girls managed to find a pie shop again. Although I must admit, I also partook in the excellent patissierie. You can't keep us Wiginers away from pies.
On the road again and heading for the hills (mountains)
Next stop was  Lake "Tekapo" It's a beautiful turquoise blue colour, which is created by rock flour from the surrounding glaciers. The glaciers in the headwaters of Lake Tekapo grind rock into a fine dust on their journey down towards the lake. After a coffee we're off again.
A still day, nothing on the lake Tekapo, just like a mirror
Even the clouds are reflected perfectly in the lake, some fantastic scenary.
The next great view is over Lake "Pukaki". The snow capped mountain in the middle is mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3724m (12,217ft).
Another view of mount Cook, a little further down the lake, where there was a slight breeze over the water.
After arriving at our hotel in Twizel, we went into the centre for something to eat. We found a RSA (Returned Services Association). It being Wednesday, it was their Thai Buffett night. We all enjoyed an extremely good Thai Buffett and being a RSA it was very reasonable priced, as was their beer. In the garden at the back of the RSA was the poster, you can see below. There is obviously a lot a of Salmon andTrout fishing in this area. The poster says the World Record Brown was 42.02lbs, very impressive.

  1. If you get the chance a helicopter ride over Mt Cook or the Franz Joseph Glacier is worth considering
